Robert "Sharky" Sharkevich Sr., age 66, was working as a member of the Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department on Tuesday, Oct. 22, fighting a brush fire that had spread to more than 90 acres on Lamentation Mountain in Berlin, Meriden Police said.

Sharkevich and three other firefighters were in Meriden on the southern edge of the blaze, riding a firefighting ATV that flipped around 5:30 p.m. Sharkevich died at the scene, but the others were taken to nearby hospitals, treated for minor injuries, and released, officials said. It's unclear who was driving the vehicle.

Authorities initially reported Sharkevich was killed in Berlin.

Memorials poured in as word of the retired Hartford firefighter's death spread.

Wethersfield Schools Superintendent Michael T. Emmett sent a message to parents and teachers that counseling would be available to students and staff.

'Sharky' was a parent, grandparent, and Physical Services Carpenter in the school district. Words cannot express the magnitude of this loss. I do want to let everyone know that counseling will be available at schools tomorrow to assist staff and students that need support. Do not hesitate to reach out. On behalf of the Wethersfield Public Schools, I offer the Sharkevich family our deepest condolences and wish them peace and comfort during this difficult time."

Former Wethersfield Mayor Mike Rell posted he was "beyond words" after learning of the news.

State Representative Liz Linehan thanked all firefighters for their bravery, and gave her "deepest gratitude to Firefighter Robert Sharkevich, who made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of the residents of Connecticut."

Fire and police departments across the northeast posted condolences and prayers for Sharkevich, his family, and the men and women still battling the blaze on Lamentation Mountain.

Meriden Police said the crash that killed Sharkevich is under investigation.
